Apple today has launched a new service program for iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro users who are facing issues with their device’s speakers. Apple says that the affected devices “may experience sound issues due to a component that might fail on the receiver module.” This marks the first service program for the iPhone 12 lineup. According to Apple, this issue affects “a very small percentage” of iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro devices manufactured between October 2020 and April 2021....

According to a new illustration surfaced today by the Atlanta Business Chronicle, Apple is planning a brand new design for its upcoming store in Atlanta’s Lenox Square shopping center. The multilevel space is said to replace Apple’s existing single floor store inside the mall, which first opened in 2002. While details are light, the report states that plans were recently shown at a Buckhead Development Review Committee meeting for an unidentified tenant at Lenox Square....

Aluminum is Apple’s go-to material for making many of its products sleek and durable, and now the company is taking serious steps to ensure using its favorite metal is also good for the planet. Two major aluminum producers are announcing a “joint venture to commercialize patented technology that eliminates direct greenhouse gas emissions from the traditional smelting process,” and Apple played a key role in getting to this step. Alcoa Corporation and Rio Tinto Aluminum have formed a new joint venture called Elysis that is working to further develop and share a process for creating aluminum that uses a method which releases oxygen instead of greenhouse gases....

Apple will have to pay a patent holding firm called Acacia a penalty of $22 million, a federal jury in East Texas decided this week. The issue is over a patent dispute, which is all to common for Apple, regarding cellular network technology. Reuters reports that a subsidiary of Acacia Research brought the case against Apple which played out in Texas court as is common with similar cases: For its part, Acacia Research is what some in the technology world would describe as a patent troll....

It’s official, MacBooks are the highest-quality notebooks money can buy. Consumer advocacy group Consumer Reports has awarded the entire lineup of Apple notebooks the highest scores among all contenders, ranking them #1 in nearly every category across the board. Apple will release third public betas of iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 to testers today. This comes after yesterday’s release of iOS 14 beta 3 to developers, bringing changes such as new Clock widgets and more. Apple started public beta testing of iOS 14, iPadOS 14, and tvOS 14 two weeks ago. Going forward, we generally expect new versions to be released every two weeks. The second iOS 14 public beta likely includes the same changes introduced in the third developer beta....

Alongside today’s new iOS 8.4 beta, Apple has released yet another beta build of the upcoming OS X Yosemite 10.10.4 to developers. Today’s build is labeled as build number 14E17e, and it is available via Software Update in the Mac App Store for developers running earlier versions of the beta. Apple’s new macOS Sierra update removes the time remaining estimate from the battery status indicator on MacBooks, but there’s still another way to check for Apple’s estimate without installing third-party software. macOS includes a built-in utility called Activity Monitor that still includes a ‘Time remaining’ estimate for MacBook batteries. This method is way more buried than the menu bar method prior to macOS 10.12.2, but it’s still an estimate from Apple and not a third-party utility....
