Just one day after releasing iOS 16.2 and macOS Ventura 13.1 to all users, Apple today is rolling out the first beta of macOS Ventura 13.2 to developers along with iOS 16.3 beta. With macOS Ventura 13.1, Apple introduced Advanced Data Protection to iCloud, which provides end-to-end encryption for messages, backups, photos, notes, and other data stored in iCloud. Silicon Valley Business Journal reports that Apple has secured a deal to build another spaceship campus in Sunnyvale, California. The company will purchase Landbank Investments LLC’s planned Central & Wolfe campus which comes in at 777,000-square-feet at Central Expressway and Wolfe Road in Silicon Valley. Specific terms of the deal are unknown at this point, although the report claims that the deal has been finalized and completed. It’s also believed that Apple most likely leased, not purchased, the project....

Apple has today updated Apple Maps with new transit direction cities, and expanded support for indoor maps for malls and airports. Today’s Apple Maps updates are being done server side so no software update is required. Apple officially announced yesterday that its Thunderbolt Display is dead. The monitor was never updated to match the much thinner design of the current iMacs, it featured a MagSafe 1 connector and required a MagSafe 2 adapter, and its resolution was far inferior to Retina iMacs so it was no surprise to see it finally discontinued. Apple typically replaces a discontinued product with a newer version, though, so yesterday’s move could be interpreted as a sign that the company is fully exiting the external display business....

It was an update day yesterday for Apple. Having released an updated version of MobileMe Control Panel for Windows that added compatibility with the new MobileMe Calendar backend in Outlook for Windows, Apple also unleashed Snow Leopard Font Update and iPhoto 9.1.2. The United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) on Tuesday granted a new Apple patent related to advanced text-to-speech features that may or may not be fully realized in future mobile devices and computers or brought to the company’s existing lineup via a software update. Apple first filed for this patent back in February of 2006, almost a year before the original iPhone announcement. This suggests the company sought to improve the quality of machine-generated speech on its devices well ahead of this month’s introduction of Siri, whose text-to-speech and speech-to-text interfaces are outlined in Apple’s patent applications from 2009 and 2011....

Following redesigns of many of its other applications, Apple has completely redesigned its iBooks application for iOS 7. Following the earnings report yesterday, Apple company stock has popped 7% as investors were pleased with Apple’s guidance for the September quarter and total revenue drop for fiscal Q3 was lower than anticipated. Apple is planning a multi-year roadmap for its cross-platform app project. First previewed at last year’s WWDC with the launch of the News, Stocks, Home and Voice Memos app, Marzipan makes it near-automatic for developers to port iPad apps to macOS. A third-party SDK for Marzipan will launch at this year’s WWDC for iPad and Mac universal apps. According to Bloomberg, Apple plans to add Marzipan-esque conversion of iPhone to Mac apps in 2020....

A new report out today on navigation app trends sheds some light on how far Google Maps could be ahead of Apple Maps and other services. Included are the top reasons why almost 70% of users are sticking with Google Maps. In its survey, The Manifest asked roughly 500 smartphone users about their favorite navigation app and what factors led them to their choice. Chart via Apple had another blowout quarter this holiday and set records across the board. iPhones, which many estimated optimistically at 30 million, leapt to over 37 million to create the biggest quarter ever. iPads crossed 15 million for the first time, and even Apple’s venerable Mac line crossed 5 million units for the first time (likely helped by the popular MacBook Air lineup). iPods, if you needed a downside, were off by 20-percent —which is not terrible, because Apple did not upgrade most of the iPods available last Christmas....
