Although most users have likely installed OS X 10.9.2 by now, after its release late last month, Apple is providing a reminder to those who haven’t. Laggards like myself who are still running OS X 10.9.1 have begun to see notifications like the one below over the past day, pushing the critical update which included a fix for the well-publicized SSL bug found in both iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks....

Apple today has announced its annual celebration of the Chinese New Year. This year, the company’s promotion for the holiday is a one-day sale that will see customers receive a free pair of Beats Solo3 Wireless On-Ear Headphones with the purchase of a qualifying Mac or iPhone. The promotion will run in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore, kicking off on January 6th at 8AM local time. While Apple is celebrating the Chinese New Year in Malaysia, it’s not extending the same promotion to customers there....

Earlier this week, our sister site 9to5Google found references to Apple One – Apple’s upcoming subscription bundle – in the Apple Music app for Android. Bloomberg previously reported that Apple One encompasses several tiers offering combinations of Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, Apple News+, and iCloud storage for a single discounted price. The strings include mentions like “Cancel Apple One,” “Keep Apple One,” and “You can unsubscribe from Apple One and keep only what you want....

Apple is widely expected to land rights to stream NFL Sunday Ticket on the Apple TV platform, but with an estimated price tag in the $2.5 billion range, it is taking a while for the deal to be finalized. In the meantime, likely as an offshoot of those negotiations, Apple Music has been announced as the new sponsor of the Super Bowl halftime show, in a multi-year deal starting with Super Bowl 57 on February 12, 2023....

Apple Music TV has been launched today, as a 24-hour stream of music videos and music-related content along the lines of the original MTV channel before its dilution into reality TV. Variety reports that it’s free to watch in the US. It will include ‘exclusive new music videos and premiers, special curated music video blocks, and live shows and events as well as chart countdowns and guests,’ according to the announcement…...

Apple has officially started selling its Magic Keyboard with Touch ID as a standalone purchase. Two options are available with the newest keyboards that are compatible with M1 Macs. Meanwhile, there’s a refreshed version without Touch ID as well. Spotted by Rene Ritchie, the new Magic Keyboard with built-in biometrics is available with both the numpad and without. The Magic Keyboard with Touch ID is priced at $149 and the Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad is going for $179....

Apple just announced during its WWDC keynote that it’s opening up its Touch ID fingerprint sensor on the iPhone to third-party app developers. Apple showed off the personal finance management app Mint (pictured above) using the Touch ID feature to allow users to login instead of using the keyboard to enter a password. Previously Apple limited this feature to its own App Store and iTunes purchases as well as unlocking the device itself....

Messages will not install unless you have the latest version installed. Next download the free Messages Beta. After you’ve downloaded the Messages beta, run through the installer. In an update on the developer portal today, Apple has started encouraging developers to update their apps for the new iPhone Xs, iPhone Xs Max, and iPhone XR. The company is also pushing Mac developers to submit their apps to the all-new App Store coming with macOS Mojave, and to the iOS App Store with iOS 12 features. Apple says the new Mac App Store gives developers the ability to add, “insightful stories, curated collections, and videos....

Apple today updated its list of officially supported banks and credit unions for Apple Pay, adding over 35 new institutions across the US, Canada, Russia and Japan. Today’s additions to the list follow an additional 40 banks and credit unions that Apple added in the U.S. in November, as well as the launch of the company’s new Apple Pay Cash feature for person to person payments via Siri and iMessage that arrived in the US earlier this month....

Apple is promoting a new TikTok challenge in Brazil featuring the Apple Watch. With the hashtag #DançarTbConta – which translates to “Dancing also counts [as an exercise]” – Apple takes advantage of the popularity of the app in the country while promoting dance exercise on the Watch. Although it’s not the first time Apple is promoting an ad on TikTok, it’s the first time the company is doing so in Brazil....

Apple has made a new update available today for Mac users running Big Sur. Instead of macOS 11.6.1 or similar, the release is called “Device Support Update” and brings fixes to make sure updating and restoring iPhone and iPad with a Mac is working correctly. Earlier this month, we saw Apple release macOS 11.6 with important security fixes for two flaws that may have been actively exploited in the wild....

A patent application published by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office earlier today reveals Apple is flirting with the idea of a universal touchscreen controller capable of controlling multiple devices including a “television, a video tape player, a video disk player, a stereo, a home control system, or a computer system.” The patent application is titled “Apparatus and Method to Facilitate Universal Remote Control” and was filed Sept. 30, 2011....

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerbeg has said that Apple’s App Store ‘deserves scrutiny’ when asked whether he considered it a monopoly which deserves to face antitrust action by governments. He declined to answer the question directly, but did strongly hint that he agrees … Zuckerberg made the comments in an Axios interview. As Business Insider notes, the Facebook founder contrasted the App Store with Google’s Play store. Well I certainly think that they have the unilateral control of what gets on the phones in terms of apps,” he replied....

Apple updated its iTunes Connect Mobile app today that allows developers to keep an eye on their app sales stats and related data from iTunes Connect. Among the new features are “enhanced product detail views for your entire catalog,” the ability to view app ratings and reviews from customers, a new advanced search feature, and user-interface refinements on the iPad. Developers will also now be able to reject apps submitted for review and release approved updates from within the app....

Finding that some investors are concerned about whether Apple will retain its dominance in years to come, Bank of America analysts have highlighted 20 patents which they say shows that Apple is still innovating. Apple has notified members of the iTunes Affiliate program that it has opened up a new payment option for partners. Rather than sending money directly to your bank, iTunes Affiliate commissions can now instead be paid directly as iTunes Store credit. This means the payments are channeled as redemption codes to top up the credit on an Apple ID account, to buy apps, music, or pay for iCloud Storage. The affiliate program is available to registered partners and shares a small cut of iTunes content revenue with the partners, if customers buy through the special affiliate links....

Top U.S. Brands via Brand Finance According to Brand Finance, a London-based research firm, Apple is now second to Google in brand value after a 33% increase to overtake IBM, Microsoft, Wal-Mart, and GE for the first time. The firm attributes Apple’s success to “innovative design, loyal consumer base and well-executed marketing activities.” Google, sitting in the top spot with a brand value of almost $48.3 billion was up 9% among the top 30 U....

As it has done in recent years, today Apple launched a special Boxing Day sale in at least the Canadian iTunes store offering deals on select albums and songs. The sale is accessible through the iTunes store on both iOS devices and on the desktop.
